READPHILIPPINES will be changing its name!! More info will be posted shortly.

READPHILIPPINES, CANADA is currently a 4-member group of Filipino-Canadians residing in Toronto. Each of one of us comes from a different background and interests in life but we found our commonground; the love for reading and communiy service.

Our first meeting happened on November 11, 2005 to address the needs of one of the schools in Infanta, Quezon which was destroyed by the hurricane on November 29, 2004. PICAB Elementary School needs to be rebuilt; its library has to be stocked up with books, and it is important for the children to get back to their reading again.

Hence, the birth of ReadPhilippines whose goals are to promote reading and literacy and to help fill up the bookshelves of the libraries of underprivileged schools in the Philippines especially schools in the rural areas of the country. We realize these goals by sending good-quality used books ranging from reference books to paperback novels to recreational reading materials and informative magazines. We strongly encourages individuals and organizations to donate used books as well as monetary donations to defray our shipping costs. We aim to fill up the empty shelves of these schools with books that children need to learn the skills essential to provide for themselves as well as others. We aim for these books to be available in the school libraries where they are  mostly needed as soon as possible.

WHY DO WE DO IT?

Books educate and are a portal to the many aspects of life. Books are the basic tools of literacy and education but millions of children and adults in the Philippines do not have access to them. So for many people in the Philippines books truly are a gift of life and hope.

We also want to save books from ending up in landfills. Collecting these books and putting them back in library shelves and hands of people who need them not only impacts the society but our environment as well.
